Where in Dubai

Dr. Subhash Ushakoyala, Specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon, sees patients after road accidents for orthopaedic review and follow-up at Grand Infinity Medical Center in Al Muteena, Deira, Dubai. The clinic is not an emergency department. When you book, tell his nurse it was a road accident and which bones were injured. Bring the hospital discharge letter, operation notes, and every X-ray and CT scan, on disc or as a report.

What is road accident injuries and polytrauma care?

A road traffic accident can injure several parts of the body at once. Doctors call this polytrauma. The orthopaedic part covers broken bones, dislocated joints, and open injuries, where the skin over a broken bone is cut or torn. An open fracture, also called a compound fracture, carries a high risk of infection, because dirt and germs can get into the wound and reach the bone. The first hours are spent in a hospital emergency department, where the team checks breathing, bleeding and the head, chest and abdomen before the bones. After that, the fractures are fixed in an agreed order, and recovery is planned as a whole rather than one injury at a time.

Who it can help

  • Someone with one or more broken bones or dislocated joints after a car, motorbike or pedestrian accident.
  • An open wound over or near a broken bone.
  • A patient treated in hospital after an accident who now needs orthopaedic follow-up.
  • Pain, stiffness or weakness in a limb months after an accident.
  • A fracture from an accident that is healing slowly or in a poor position.

How Dr. Subhash approaches it

Dr. Subhash is a specialist orthopaedic surgeon. Trauma is one of the main interests on his CV, and his services list includes road traffic accidents, polytrauma management, fractures, dislocations and open injuries. He reviews every injury together, with the scans and hospital notes, and agrees an order of treatment. He explains which breaks can heal in a cast or brace and which may need an operation, and how the injuries affect each other during recovery.

What to expect

  1. Emergency care first

After a serious accident, a hospital emergency department checks and stabilises you before any bone is treated.

  2. Specialist review

He examines each injury, checks the skin, nerves and blood supply, and reviews the X-rays and any CT scans.

  3. Open injuries

A wound over a broken bone is cleaned in an operation as soon as possible, with antibiotics and a tetanus booster if needed.

  4. Fixing the bones

Broken bones are held with a cast, a brace, or with plates, rods, screws or an outside frame, in an agreed order.

  5. Follow-up and rehabilitation

Repeat X-rays show the healing. Physiotherapy rebuilds movement and strength step by step.

Recovery, in general terms

Every patient is different. These are typical milestones, not a promise; your own plan comes from your consultation.

  • Most broken bones take about six to twelve weeks to knit; open and multiple fractures often take longer.
  • Several injuries at once usually mean a longer, staged recovery, with weight on each limb increased as X-rays allow.
  • Wounds over open fractures are watched closely for signs of infection during healing.
  • Returning to driving and work depends on which bones were broken and how they heal.

Risks to know about

  • Infection, especially after an open fracture.
  • Slow healing, or a bone that heals out of line.
  • Stiffness in joints near the injuries.

When to book a visit

Book a visit for orthopaedic follow-up after a road accident, or for a second opinion on your treatment plan. Book sooner if a wound becomes red, hot, swollen or leaks, or pain is getting worse rather than better. Go to emergency care straight away after any serious road accident, or if a bone is through the skin, a limb looks deformed, there is heavy bleeding, or a hand or foot is cold, pale or numb.

Questions patients ask

I was treated at a hospital in Dubai after an accident. Can he take over my follow-up?

You can book a review. Bring the discharge letter, operation notes and all the scans. He checks how each injury is healing and plans the next steps with you.

Should I come to the clinic straight after an accident?

No. The clinic is not an emergency department. After a road accident, go to a hospital emergency department or call an ambulance first. Book the clinic once you have been assessed.

What is an open fracture?

It is a broken bone with a wound in the skin over or near it. Germs can reach the bone, so it is cleaned in an operation as soon as possible and antibiotics are given to prevent infection.

Why are my injuries treated in stages?

With several injuries, the most urgent problems come first. Some fractures are held temporarily until swelling and wounds settle, then fixed in a later operation.
