Getting a second opinion

You can ask Dr. Subhash Ushakoyala, Specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon at Grand Infinity Medical Center in Al Muteena, Deira, Dubai, for a second opinion on a bone or joint problem, or on an operation another doctor has suggested. Asking is normal and sensible, and it is your right.

When a second opinion helps

  • You have been told you need an operation and want to hear the choices again.
  • You are not sure the diagnosis is right, or your symptoms do not fit it.
  • Treatment so far has not helped and you want a fresh look.
  • You had an operation elsewhere and are not recovering as you expected.

What to bring

The more he can see, the more useful his opinion is.

  • The scans themselves, not only the reports: an X-ray, MRI or CT disc, a download link or the films.
  • The written reports of those scans and any blood tests.
  • Letters from the doctors you have seen, and what they suggested.
  • Operation notes and discharge letters, if you have had surgery.
  • A list of the treatments you have tried, such as physiotherapy, injections and medicines, and how they worked.

What he can and cannot say from reports alone

From reports and scans, he can explain what they show in plain words, tell you which choices usually exist for that problem, and say which questions are worth asking.

He cannot give a full opinion on your own treatment without seeing you. Two people with the same MRI can need different care. The examination, how you walk and move, and what the pain stops you doing all count. A full opinion may need an examination or a new scan.

A second opinion is about your care, not about the first doctor.

How to arrange it

  1. Book

Call or message the clinic and say you would like a second opinion, and on what.

  2. Gather

Collect your scans, reports and letters before the visit.

  3. Talk it through

He reviews the papers, examines you and explains what he thinks. You can bring a family member.

  4. Decide

You choose what to do next. You can return to your first doctor with his view, or continue with him.

Questions patients ask

Will my first doctor mind?

Doctors expect patients to ask for second opinions before big decisions. You do not have to tell anyone, but sharing the result can help your care.

Can he give a second opinion without seeing me?

He can explain what reports and scans show, but a full opinion on your treatment needs an examination. Ask the clinic what can be arranged.

Do I need my scans or just the reports?

Bring both if you can. The images themselves often show more than the written report.

Does insurance cover a second opinion?

Some plans do and some do not. Ask your insurer before the visit.
