Where in Dubai

Physiotherapy and rehabilitation are part of Dr. Subhash Ushakoyala's care at Grand Infinity Medical Center in Al Muteena, Deira, Dubai. Wear loose, comfortable clothes that let the area being treated move freely. Bring any operation notes, X-rays or MRI reports, and a referral or approval if your insurer needs one.

What is physiotherapy and rehabilitation?

Physiotherapy helps ease pain and get you moving again after an injury, an operation, or with a long-standing joint, muscle or back problem. The core of it is exercise: movements to free up stiff joints and to strengthen the muscles that support them. Other treatments can be used alongside the exercise. Electrotherapy, such as TENS, passes a weak electrical current through pads on the skin to ease pain for a while. Spinal traction and decompression gently stretch the spine. Rehabilitation is a planned programme that builds back strength, balance and confidence step by step. You are also given exercises to do at home, and doing them regularly matters as much as the sessions.

Who it can help

  • Recovery after a fracture, a dislocation or joint surgery.
  • Neck pain, back pain or a slipped disc.
  • Knee, shoulder or other joint pain, including arthritis.
  • Sports injuries such as sprains and strains.
  • Weak or stiff muscles after time in a cast, a sling or bed.

How Dr. Subhash approaches it

Physiotherapy is on Dr. Subhash's own list of services at Grand Infinity Medical Center: electrotherapy, targeted muscle-strengthening exercises, rehabilitation, spinal traction and spinal decompression. The problem is assessed first, and you agree which of these fit. Exercise sits at the centre of the plan, and other treatments are used alongside it. Progress is reviewed and the plan changed if you are not improving.

What to expect

  1. Assessment

He asks about your symptoms, health and daily life, and checks movement, strength and balance.

  2. A plan

You are told which treatments fit and roughly how many sessions to expect.

  3. Sessions

Exercises to improve movement and strength, with electrotherapy or traction where they suit you.

  4. Home exercises

You are shown exercises to do at home between sessions, and how often.

  5. Review

Progress is checked and the plan adjusted.

Recovery, in general terms

Every patient is different. These are typical milestones, not a promise; your own plan comes from your consultation.

  • Progress is usually gradual, over weeks rather than days.
  • Doing the home exercises regularly makes a large difference.
  • Some soreness after exercise is common and should ease within a day or two.

Risks to know about

  • Electrotherapy pads can irritate the skin. They are not placed on broken, infected or numb skin.
  • Tell him if you are pregnant, as some treatments, such as TENS, are not used in pregnancy without advice.

When to book a visit

Book a visit if pain or stiffness is stopping you from working, sleeping or moving normally. Book after a fracture, surgery or time in a cast if movement and strength are slow to come back. Go to emergency care straight away if you have numbness around your bottom or genitals, changes in bladder or bowel control, or weakness or numbness in both legs.

Questions patients ask

Does insurance in Dubai cover physiotherapy?

Many plans do, often with a limit on sessions and a need for a doctor's referral. Ask the clinic to check your plan before you start.

Does traction or electrotherapy fix back pain on its own?

No. UK guidance (NICE) does not recommend traction or TENS on their own for low back pain, and puts exercise at the centre of treatment. Where they are used, it is alongside exercise. Ask him why each part is in your plan.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the problem and how you respond. You get an idea after the first assessment, and it is reviewed as you go.

Do I need physiotherapy after surgery or a fracture?

Often, yes. Exercises help bring back movement and strength in joints and muscles that were stiff or rested while healing.
